When Aging Makes It Harder to Stay Organized

In my line of work I see the circle of life. As we all age, maintaining an organized home can become increasingly challenging. What once felt simple – sorting mail and paying bills, putting things away, keeping closets in order — can start to feel overwhelming. And then there is the ever-changing speed of technology and what that is doing to our executive brain function. Whether I’m at POSSE or with my mother, the visual signs of physical and emotional changes make it harder for seniors to stay organized.
For some older adults, this clutter can even develop into hoarding behavior – a deeply emotional response to loss, fear, or uncertainty about the future. Depending on the severity of the situation, POSSE might be able to help. We approach these situations individually with patience, respect, and sensitivity.
Our goal isn’t just to “get rid of stuff,” but to help people create safe, comfortable spaces that support how they live today. Whether it’s hoarding tendencies, downsizing, decluttering, or finding new systems that work, we help clients age in place more easily and confidently.
