Time Management for a Crazy Day
By Jean Marie Herron
Most the time I can handle the To-Do's in my planner but once in a while a day comes when I find myself handling way too much for 24 hours. On those days, I find myself borrowing some good advice from Julie Morgenstern. When I read her book, "Organizing from the Inside Out" I thought this was a handy-dandy way to adjust to the priorities if I truly needed to.
They are called the Four D's. When you simply feel overloaded with your day's schedule try utilizing one of these ideas below.
- Delete
- Delay
- Diminish
- Delegate
Delete -This is for items that do not make it to my priority list or items that keep turning up on my planner too many days in a row. I figure if I didn't find the time to do them before, maybe they don't actually need to get done at all.
Delay -I reschedule things that are of significance to me but just can't seem to get to them today.
Diminish -There are many tasks that I do want to do but maybe good is good enough and I don't need to do them perfectly.
Delegate -I used to not ask anyone for help. That was before my 40's. Now I start with asking for help especially from my children and husband and those colleagues I simply enjoy working with.
When you realize that you can't possibly fit all your plans into your day, help yourself make decisions based on the 4D's. It'll help you take action which will project you forward.
